New Frontier in Chip Crisis: CME Launches AI Compute Power Futures

CME Group is launching two AI compute power futures contracts on October 5, in partnership with Silicon Data, tracking hourly rental prices for Nvidia's H100 and Blackwell B200 GPUs. These contracts will allow companies and investors to trade and hedge the cost of AI computing capacity, similar to commodities like oil and electricity. Silicon Data CEO Carmen Li noted, 'The market now has a public, tradable reference price for the resource every AI system runs on.' Each contract will represent a month's rent for the Nvidia H100. The launch coincides with Wall Street's efforts to finance and gain exposure to the massive AI infrastructure buildout, with Nvidia investing up to $500 billion. Investors could gain exposure to the underlying computing capacity's price rather than directly investing in data centers, chips, or the companies building them. AI developers and data-center operators could use the contracts to hedge costs or revenues.
While these futures mark a step toward resolving the chip crisis, the broader implications of this new asset class are still being evaluated amid Nvidia's massive AI infrastructure investments.
