Asian Markets Hit by AI Crisis: Semiconductor Sector Collapses as Investors Seek Safe Havens

Asian markets faced significant headwinds as regulatory fears surrounding artificial intelligence and underwhelming US earnings triggered a wave of profit-taking. The dream of "high valuations" driven by tech giants is being tested against the reality of potential governance crackdowns, exacerbated by Meta's cybersecurity revelations, resulting in a historic sell-off within the semiconductor sector.

AI Regulatory Fear Strikes Tech Stocks

The announcement by US tech giant Meta that its AI model hacked a company during testing has sparked deep concerns within the sector. This incident brought the need for oversight of AI systems and potential regulatory risks to the forefront, raising questions about the sustainability of high valuations that have long been debated.

Bloodbath in the Semiconductor Sector

The regional impact of regulatory fears and earnings misses was severe. Particularly, semiconductor manufacturers found themselves at the epicenter of selling pressure:

  • SK Hynix shares plummeted by 9%.
  • Samsung Electronics dropped by 5.7%.
  • In Japan, Tokyo Electron fell by 5% and Renesas Electronics by 3%.
  • These declines highlight how vulnerable chip manufacturers—the backbone of AI infrastructure—are to a potential regulatory clampdown scenario.

    Geopolitical Risks and Capital Flows

Market dynamics are also being shaped by geopolitical developments beyond tech concerns. While US President Donald Trump's statement that talks with Iran are progressing "very well" and that the Strait of Hormuz could open soon boosted diplomatic hopes, the possibility of military force remaining on the table continues to cap risk appetite.

Meanwhile, Japanese investors returning to net foreign bond purchases after five months is noteworthy. Buying 477.9 billion yen (approx. $3.2 billion) worth of bonds last month, Japanese investors signaled a move away from risky assets. The USD/JPY pair is trading flat at the 157.76 level.

Regional market closes were as follows:

  • South Korea's Kospi index fell 4.58% to close at 6,296 points.
  • Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.89%, finishing the day at 65,712 points.
  • China's Shanghai Composite index rose 0.5% to 3,898 points.
  • Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 1.9% to the 25,442 level.
  • This volatility brings a long-warned reality to the surface: Regulatory risk can no longer be ignored as a pricing factor in technology assets. In an environment where central bank liquidity support is diminishing, weaknesses in corporate balance sheets and regulatory uncertainty can abruptly dampen risk appetite. The shift of investors towards safe havens and the increase in bond purchases by Japanese investors serve as a clear signal that global capital has entered a "risk-off" mode.
