Baltic Freight Index Rebound: How Markets Will Respond to Capesize Gains

The Baltic Exchange's dry cargo freight index rose by 41 points on Thursday, ending a three-day decline following a rebound in capesize and panamax rates. The main index increased by 1.6%, reaching 2,673, its highest level since July 24. The capesize index gained 100 points, rising 2.5% to 4,167. Daily earnings for capesize vessels, typically carrying 150,000 tons of iron ore or coal, increased by 908 dollars, reaching 34,292. The panamax index rose by 45 points, up 2.3% to 2,040, its highest level since July 24. Daily earnings for panamax vessels, carrying 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, increased by 410 dollars, reaching 18,363. Meanwhile, the supramax segment continued its decline, hitting its lowest level in eight weeks. Dalian iron ore futures hit a one-year low, as rising losses at Chinese steel mills and expectations of further production cuts suppressed prices.
The Baltic index's rebound signals stability in global commodity demand, but the decline in supramax rates raises concerns about the competitive edge of smaller-capacity vessels. Meanwhile, rising profitability pressures in Turkish banking are adding to market volatility.
