Energy think tank Ember’s latest report projects the deployment of 459 GigaWatt hours of new battery capacity in 2024, a 50% increase over the 307 GigaWatt hours added in 2025.

Cost Decline: 95% Drop, $140 per Kilowatt‑hour

Advances in lithium iron phosphate technology have driven global average installation costs from $2,634 in 2010 to $140 in 2025, a 95% reduction over 15 years.

Regional Highlights: Bulgaria, Chile, and California

  • Bulgaria: New battery capacity could move 77% of daily solar output to nighttime hours in 2025.
  • Chile: The same year’s capacity could shift 76% of solar production.
  • California: In the first half of the year, solar and batteries met over 25% of demand between 19:00‑21:00.
  • Revenue Streams and Integration

    To fully leverage battery potential, new revenue streams—energy arbitrage, ancillary services, and capacity payments—must be created.

    Markets should view these developments as an infrastructure that balances hourly production volatility; batteries will play a key role not only in storage but also in system security and flexibility.
