BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Join UK Tokenization Taskforce

The U.K. is accelerating its push into tokenization through an HM Treasury-led initiative, bringing together over 50 financial institutions including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley to develop live-use cases across wholesale markets. The task force, supported by the City of London Corporation, will focus initially on tokenised repo markets, aiming to unlock productivity and cost efficiencies in global trading hubs like London.

  • Tokenization Market Potential: According to Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the tokenised real-world assets (RWA) market could reach $88 trillion by 2035, dwarfing the current crypto and stablecoin market of $3 trillion.

  • Economic Gains: HM Treasury's report predicts up to £33 billion ($44.2 billion) annual economic output and £14 billion in tax revenue by 2035.

  • Global Competition: Chris Woolard, author of the report, emphasizes that tokenised markets are "a network game" and the U.K. must move at the speed of the most agile players to secure a stake in international markets.

  • Infrastructure Challenges: Banking Circle's Kirit Bhatia highlights the need for payment systems supporting real-time settlement, cross-border transfers, and interoperability between stablecoins, tokenised deposits, and fiat rails.

  • Market Trends: CEX trading volumes rose for the first time in five months in June, with spot climbing 15.3% to $1.11T and RWA perpetual volumes hitting a record $311B.
  • Expert Analysis (Cem Talu): This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the digital transformation of global finance. The participation of major banks signals concrete progress beyond regulatory debates. If real-time liquidity is achieved in repo markets, London's model could influence other exchanges. However, as Bhatia noted, the lack of integration with existing fiat infrastructure may limit tokenization to peripheral speed gains. In the short term, I expect to see impacts in ETF flows and on-chain data.
