Volatility Brake at Borsa Istanbul: Strict Constraints on Three Equities

In a strategic move to curb excessive volatility, Borsa Istanbul has implemented the Volatility Based Measure System (VBTS) for three specific equities following a mandate from the Capital Markets Board (CMB). This intervention is designed to mitigate speculative pressure and maintain overall market stability.

Strategic Barriers Against Speculative Surges

To preserve market depth and price stability, the Board has imposed operational restrictions on the following tickers:

  • BARMA.E
  • SKBNK.E
  • KUYAS.E
  • These measures will be effective from the start of the session on July 24, 2026, and will remain in force until the close of the session on August 21, 2026.

Constraints on Liquidity and Leverage Management

During the specified period, two fundamental financial mechanisms for trading these three stocks have been suspended:

  • Short selling is strictly prohibited.
  • Margin trading capabilities have been deactivated.
  • By eliminating leverage, the regulator aims to protect investors from excessive risk while preventing abnormal price swings that could distort the fair market value of the assets.

From a quantitative perspective, the activation of VBTS typically occurs when an asset enters an 'overbought' territory or experiences an abnormal volume surge. By removing leverage and short-selling options, the regulatory body limits the maneuverability of market makers and algo-traders, forcing the price to seek a more organic equilibrium. While short-term volatility may persist, such interventions are essential for the establishment of a sustainable long-term trend.
