The UK's largest water reuse system, which could save thousands of litres of water daily for residents in one of the country's driest regions, remains off due to drinking water regulations. A model water recycling system within an urban housing development in Cambridgeshire has been idle since it was ready in 2021. As water supplies in England reach critical levels, pressure is mounting for legal changes to allow the system to operate. Designed to conserve water resources and promote wastewater recycling, the system has been deemed non-compliant with current drinking water standards.
