ChatGPT Health's Epic Integration: AI-Powered Healthcare Data Analysis

OpenAI announced the integration of ChatGPT Health with Epic's electronic health record (EHR) system, which holds data for over 325 million patients. This integration will allow clinicians to import patient data, summarize appointment notes, and analyze medication usage. Notably, ChatGPT can be directly embedded within EHR workflows, enabling doctors to perform pre-visit reviews without leaving a patient's chart. OpenAI emphasized that the integration provides read-only access and that AI does not write back to health records. Additionally, a new Healthcare Public Data plugin has been added, allowing access to sources like ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, and PubMed for trial eligibility, medication identifiers, and coverage policies. OpenAI reported that ChatGPT Health was rolled out to all U.S. consumers last month, with 300 million health-related queries per week. However, the company reiterated that AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment. Recent legal disputes, including a Florida pastor's lawsuit over fatal recommendations and a family's claim of incorrect dosage advice, highlight ongoing concerns about AI safety in healthcare.
