Commerzbank Warning: Structural Weakness in Turkish Banking Pressures the Lira

A recent analysis by Commerzbank economist Tatha Ghose warns that the deteriorating financial structure of the Turkish banking sector is intensifying downward pressure on the Turkish Lira.

Capital Adequacy Under Siege

Citing recent assessments from Fitch Ratings, the report highlights that the removal of regulatory flexibility for foreign currency-denominated risk-weighted assets has led to a significant contraction in bank profitability. Key sector metrics reveal a worrying trend:

  • Core capital (Tier 1) ratio: Declined from 14.1% to 11.5%.
  • Non-performing loan (NPL) ratio: Increased from 3.1% to 3.3%.
  • The Resurgence of Dollarization

High funding costs and persistent inflation are expected to further squeeze credit margins through the second quarter. The shifting composition of deposits underscores a growing fragility in local currency confidence:

  • Foreign currency share in total deposits: Rose from 35.2% to 38.1%.
  • This upward trend in dollarization serves as a clear indicator of how rapidly trust in the Lira can erode when external macroeconomic conditions deteriorate.

The simultaneous erosion of capital buffers and the upward trend in dollarization present a dual threat to macroeconomic stability. From a wealth management perspective, the tightening credit margins and rising NPLs necessitate a highly selective approach to banking sector exposures, prioritizing institutions with robust capital cushions.
