New York Fed verileri, Amerikan hane halkının kredi kartı borçlarının **1.26 trilyon dolara** yükselerek rekor seviyelere yaklaştığını ortaya koyuyor.

US Consumer Debt at Breaking Point: The $1.26 Trillion Warning Sign

New York Fed data reveals that American credit card debt has surged to $1.26 trillion, approaching record highs. While total household debt stock stands at $18.8 trillion, credit card balances alone saw a $21 billion increase in the second quarter. Economists indicate that rising inflation and climbing interest rates have triggered this borrowing surge by constricting consumer budgets.

Rising Indebtedness in Light of Fed Data

The latest report from the New York Fed presents data challenging financial stability:

  • Although total household debt decreased by $13 billion from the previous quarter, credit card debt rose by 1.7%, nearing last year's peak.
  • "Serious delinquency" rates, defined as payments overdue by more than 90 days, surged from 7.6% to 12.8% between Q3 2022 and Q1 2026.
  • Joelle Scally, Economic Policy Advisor at the New York Fed, emphasized that while delinquency rates for most products have held steady, new delinquencies for auto loans and credit cards remain elevated, a trend under close monitoring.
  • Inflation Pressure and The Rate Trap

The underlying dynamics driving consumer borrowing involve the rising cost of living and increased credit costs:

  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4% for the 12 months ending July, with the energy index spiking 14.7% and the food index increasing 3%.
  • Credit card interest rates have climbed steadily from an average of 15% in 2021 to nearly 21% today.
  • According to a survey by Achieve, more than half of American consumers carry credit card balances to cover rising essential expenses, with 25% carrying this debt for six months or longer.
  • Signals of a Great Recession

Fed researchers warn that the combination of higher rates and tighter budgets is creating a dangerous debt spiral, raising concerns that Americans are falling behind on debt payments at rates not seen since the Great Recession.

These macroeconomic indicators serve as a critical demand signal for the air logistics sector. The diminishing borrowing capacity of American consumers could lead to a loss of momentum in air cargo demand, particularly within the e-commerce and high-value consumer goods (electronics, apparel) segments. Capacity utilization rates observed in airline cargo operations move in direct correlation with this slowdown in consumer spending; there is a risk of suppressed cargo revenues in the coming quarters.
