Ethereum’s Half‑Staked Threshold: Will Rewards Vanish?

The Ethereum community is gearing up to rewrite network security and sustainability; a fresh proposal aims to eliminate staking rewards entirely once the network reaches a 50% stake.

Redrawing the Staking Threshold

Ethereum’s core security layer operates on a Proof‑of‑Stake (PoS) model, where validators replace miners by staking ETH. Under the proposal, crossing the 50% staking mark would slash new block rewards to 0%, effectively ending additional yields.

An 18‑Month Phased Reduction

Rather than an abrupt cut, the change would be phased over 18 months:

■The first 6 months would see rewards drop to 25% of current levels.

■The next 6 months would further reduce them to 12.5%.

■The final 6 months would bring rewards to 0%.

Potential Shock to Market Liquidity

Zeroing rewards could push a sizable chunk of ETH into a passive state, tightening liquidity flows. Analysts estimate the existing $30 billion staking pool could see a 20‑30% outflow risk.

Long‑Term Network Security and Competitive Landscape

Eliminating rewards may curb the influence of large whales, yet it could raise the entry barrier for new participants. This shift might reshape Ethereum’s balance against rival PoS chains like Solana and Cardano.

Markets view this move as an effort to rein in inflationary pressure and foster long‑term price stability.
