Artvin Honey: How Turkey's 10,000 Euro-per-Kilogram Honey is Shaping Global Markets?

Turkey has climbed to the position of the world's second-largest honey producer, trailing only China, according to a Financial Times report. Special honeys produced in the remote mountain regions of Artvin are fetching exceptionally high prices in international markets. In 2021, kilogram of Centauri honey extracted from caves sold for 10,000 euros. Elvish honey, produced in a secret valley, also drew interest from global buyers, with 200-gram gift sets sold at Harrods for 1,250 pounds.

The Legend and Scientific Value of 'Crazy Honey' Among Artvin's unique honeys is 'crazy honey,' produced from the nectar of wild orchids. Known to cause dizziness, nausea, and hallucinations upon consumption, it has a long history dating back to ancient Greece. Historian Xenophon recorded that soldiers passing through the region in 401 BC fell ill after consuming it, losing their senses, vomiting, and struggling to stand.

The Profunda Project: Bringing Honey's Biochemical Value to Global Markets Chefs Zeynep Ekşioğlu and Mustafa Multan, based in Istanbul, are developing a production model called 'Profunda' to bring Artvin's honey potential to international markets. Laboratory tests reveal that Profunda honey's antioxidant properties are comparable to those of New Zealand's renowned manuka honey.

The Technical Advantage of the Caucasian Bee Artvin's beekeeping is directly linked to the region's rich flora and geography. The Caucasian bee's 7-millimeter-long tongue allows it to access nectar from deep flowers that other bees struggle to reach, contributing to the production of honeys with distinct flavors.

Rural Challenges and Honey's Future Despite Artvin's high-quality honey production potential, rural life faces significant challenges. Declining rural populations, road construction, dams, and mining activities are disrupting traditional ways of life. According to TEMA's 2021 report, nearly half of Artvin's farmland is under mining licenses.

Economic Impact and Investment Opportunities Nomadic beekeepers sell kilogram of wildflower honey for approximately 45 dollars. With an average of 10 kilograms of honey per hive and 50 hives, a producer's annual revenue can reach approximately 22,500 dollars. Turkey's renowned Anzer honey, however, commands prices exceeding 200 dollars per kilogram.

The Future of the Sector New initiatives in Artvin aim to transform this natural wealth into a high-value agricultural product with scientifically proven properties. This will help preserve the region's traditional beekeeping and create new economic models to encourage young people to stay in rural areas.

The global market penetration of Artvin honey represents a significant opportunity for Turkey's agricultural sector to integrate digital transformation and value chain strengthening. The certification and marketing of such specialty products can bridge traditional rural economies with modern market conditions, unlocking substantial potential.
