India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Hit Record: $682.3 Billion and Rupee Support Measures

India has lifted its foreign exchange reserves to a $682.3 billion peak within two months, marking a new regional liquidity benchmark.

Reserve Surge: Numbers and Momentum

According to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on July 24, reserves rose by $6.1 billion compared with the previous week. Foreign assets climbed $4.9 billion, while gold holdings increased by $1.3 billion, reaching $103 billion.

Rupee Support Tactics and Dollar Outflows

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that measures implemented between June 8 and July 26 curbed $40 billion of dollar inflows. These steps were designed to limit the rupee’s depreciation, which had fallen 5 % since the onset of the US‑Iran conflict.

Market and Liquidity Dynamics

  • Reserves have risen for four consecutive weeks, adding an extra $16 billion.
  • The growth stems from a blend of RBI’s foreign‑deposit scheme and active dollar sales to support the rupee.
  • Rising energy prices have strained India’s macro outlook, prompting capital outflows; however, recent policy actions have slowed this trend.
  • Markets view this reserve build‑up as evidence of RBI’s liquidity infusion and rupee‑defence strategy. Over the longer term, a sustainable rise in foreign reserves will buttress India’s trade balance and currency stability, though global risk factors—energy price spikes and geopolitical tensions—remain sources of volatility. Controlling dollar inflows should ease pressure on the rupee and restore foreign investor confidence.
