Hyundai's EV Offensive in Turkey: IONIQ 3 Production Commences in Izmit

Hyundai Motor Company has deepened its global strategy in the electric vehicle (EV) market by officially commencing mass production of its next-generation IONIQ 3 model in Izmit, Turkey. This move solidifies the company's commitment to the electric mobility transformation in Europe and reinforces Turkey's strategic position in automotive manufacturing.

Izmit's Transformation: A Key Production Hub for Europe

Hyundai's facilities in Izmit have undergone a comprehensive transformation over the past two years, acquiring the modern infrastructure required for electric vehicle production. This modernization aims to strengthen Turkey's place in the global automotive supply chain, while simultaneously positioning it at the heart of Hyundai's production and export strategy for Europe.
  • 80% of the vehicles produced in Izmit are exported to international markets, primarily Europe.
  • The facility, operational since 1997, stands as one of Hyundai's longest-running overseas production centers outside South Korea.
  • Annual production capacity is 200,000 vehicles, with over 3.4 million units produced to date.
  • Strategic Investment and Vote of Confidence from Hyundai in Turkey

Hyundai's investments in Turkey are not limited to the IONIQ 3; preparations for the renewed i20 and Bayon models also demonstrate its commitment to supporting the local automotive supply industry. In addition to existing investments totaling 1.47 billion EUR, an additional 715 million EUR is planned for the IONIQ 3 and other next-generation models.
  • Hyundai Motor Europe CEO Xavier Martinet highlighted Turkey's strong automotive tradition, skilled workforce, competitive supplier base, and strategic geographical location.
  • Martinet stated that the company's confidence in Turkey extends beyond the IONIQ 3.
  • Hyundai Motor Türkiye CEO Alex Kim announced that approximately 50% of the factory has been modernized and over 1000 employees have taken on different roles during the transformation process.
  • Hyundai's Positioning in the Electric Vehicle Market

The production of the IONIQ 3 in Turkey is a concrete step taken by Hyundai to strengthen its competitive position in the global electric vehicle market. The introduction of this model to the European market expands the brand's EV portfolio while potentially offering significant advantages in terms of production costs and supply chain flexibility.
Ufuk Tepe (Chief Analyst, Automotive and Heavy Industry) comment: "Hyundai's decision to produce the IONIQ 3 in Turkey is a critical move given the rapid growth of the EV market in Europe and the increasing strategic importance of regional production hubs. This not only boosts manufacturing capacity but also serves Hyundai's long-term profitability goals by diversifying supply chain risks and integrating into local economies. Especially the 80% export rate proves Turkey's role as a significant production and logistics base for Europe. This investment also showcases Hyundai's adaptability in battery technologies and EV production processes; however, regional incentives, energy costs, and the sustainability of a skilled workforce will be key factors determining the long-term success of this facility in global competition."
