China Manufacturing Slumps Unexpectedly: Economy Cooling

China's manufacturing sector hit the brakes in its recovery process, exhibiting the weakest growth performance in four months this July.

Sharp Deceleration in Production Tempo

According to data released in collaboration with S&P Global and RatingDog, private sector manufacturing activities managed to stay in growth territory, but the loss of momentum was inevitable. In July, the China General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 50.9, down from the previous month's 51.7 level.

  • Market expectations were for the index to come in at 51.5.

  • The data confirms that momentum in economic activity has decreased significantly compared to June.

  • While remaining above the 50.0 threshold indicates the sector is still expanding rather than contracting, the narrowing of this margin is evident.
  • Global Demand Concerns

This dataset from the world's second-largest economy increases uncertainty regarding the future of global demand cycles. Particularly for countries with export-led growth strategies, this cold shower effect in the Chinese market complicates short-term forecasts.

The slowdown observed in China may fuel market perceptions that global inflationary pressures could soften, but the contraction on the demand side could strain the foreign trade balance of developing economies like Turkey. From a fiscal policy perspective, while the weakness in domestic demand could potentially reduce the import bill, the potential contraction in export revenues stands as a variable threatening budget targets on the table.
