Intel Stock Soars on AI Boom: 15-Year Revenue Record and $20 Billion Investment Signal

The massive demand wave driven by the artificial intelligence era is reshaping the stock market performance of chip giant Intel (INTC), as the company reported its strongest revenue growth in 15 years, shattering Wall Street expectations. The turnaround strategy led by CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took the helm in March of last year, is bearing fruit, driving the stock up approximately 170% year-to-date and making it one of the best-performing companies in the S&P 500.

Financial Performance Doubles Expectations

The second-quarter results released by the company were enough to dispel the clouds of doubt over investors. Against analyst revenue expectations of $14.43 billion, Intel announced revenue of $16.1 billion, a 15% increase year-over-year. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at 42 cents, nearly double the expected 22 cents.
  • Intel shares rose 4% in premarket trading following the news.
  • The company provided a third-quarter revenue outlook of $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion and an EPS forecast of 38 cents, both well above consensus.
  • Year-to-date, the stock has provided a return of over 170% through the 2026 close.
  • CEO Lip-Bu Tan's Strategic Pivot Towards AI

CEO Lip-Bu Tan emphasized that the company is transitioning from being just a chip manufacturer to becoming the center of artificial intelligence hardware. The growth following the company's weakest period is directly linked to its positioning in the data center and AI processor markets. "AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute," said Tan, stating that Intel is well-positioned to capture sustainable growth across its CPU franchise, ASICs, advanced packaging, and vast wafer foundry network.
  • The AI-driven business unit recorded growth of over 70% compared to the previous year.
  • AI-driven businesses accounted for approximately 70% of the company's total revenue.
  • The CEO managed the strongest revenue growth since the company's takeover in March 2025.
  • $20 Billion CapEx to Counter Supply Bottlenecks

The biggest driver behind the company's financial success is the aggressive investment made to meet rising demand. CFO David Zinsner stated that demand continues to outpace supply and announced they would be "meaningfully increasing" investments in equipment and space. The capital expenditure (CapEx) forecast of $18 billion at the beginning of the year was revised upwards to over $20 billion due to the increasing order book.
  • The capital expenditure forecast was raised by $2 billion from previous estimates.
  • The CFO had earlier drawn attention to component shortages industry-wide but is now accelerating investments to manage these pressures.
  • Markets should view this report not merely as a corporate balance sheet, but as a signal of the restructuring of the global semiconductor supply chain. Intel raising its capital expenditures above $20 billion demonstrates its use of capacity as a strategic weapon in the technology sovereignty race between the US and Europe. While such aggressive investments could mitigate inflationary pressures caused by chip shortages in the medium term, they will inevitably lead to further concentration and fierce competition within the sector in the short run.
