ECB's On-Chain Roadmap: Central Banks' Digital Transformation and the Future of Tokenization

Isabel Schnabel addressed the ECB's digital transformation strategy and discussed Darrell Duffie's paper 'Tokenized Finance and The Perimeter of Central Banking' at the Jackson Hole symposium. Schnabel highlighted that tokenization could enhance integration within the euro area, but emphasized the critical need for central banks to maintain oversight over digital assets. She suggested that integrating central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) onto blockchain platforms could modernize payment and settlement processes by leveraging programmability.
