Chip Revolution: CuspAI's £2bn Investment and Nvidia's AI Coalition

Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos and the UK government have backed CuspAI with a £2bn investment to develop AI software for discovering new materials. The Cambridge-based CuspAI raised $450m (£330m) in funding, valuing the two-year-old startup at $2.6bn. CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry coalition, including 48 companies like Nvidia, Meta, and Hyundai, to build software that will cut research times and reduce rare metal use for semiconductor manufacturers. The initiative aims to develop new materials that could boost energy efficiency and advance the power of semiconductors underpinning the AI revolution. Investors in the round include Kleiner Perkins' Josh Coyne, while CuspAI also partnered with former Apple and Google executives like John Giannandrea.
'Without progress, the next 50 years of industrial advancement will be constrained by a single challenge: the lack of materials that don't yet exist,' said CuspAI co-founders Chad Edwards and Max Welling. This development could accelerate advancements in energy networks and batteries, positioning the UK at the forefront of AI-driven material innovation.
