JPMorgan Cashes in on TL Swap Strategy in Sync with Inflation Data

Global investment bank JPMorgan has successfully closed a strategic position in Turkish markets, realizing a significant profit on interest rate swap movements. The bank stated that following July inflation data, markets had largely priced in the expected monetary easing by year-end, marking the achievement of their targets.

Operational Success on the Yield Curve

In a note sent to clients signed by JPMorgan strategists Michael Harrison and Anezka Christovova, details of a complex yield curve trade initiated on July 16 were shared. The strategy implemented by the bank included the following key elements:
  • A long (receive) position was taken in December 2026 OIS to play on the downward movement of short-term rates (steepening expectation).
  • A short (pay) position was taken in the 2y1y OIS tenor, which constitutes the belly of the curve, to hedge medium-term risks.
  • The rates in this tenor rose by 200 basis points since mid-July, supported by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and high energy prices, which bolstered the strategy.
  • Cautious Monetary Policy and Market Pricing

The slowdown in annual consumer inflation to 31.8 percent in July, marking a deceleration for the second consecutive month, pulled short-term OIS rates down. Market participants have begun pricing in approximately 430 basis points of rate cuts by the end of the year. This strengthens the possibility of the policy rate dropping to 35.70 percent, aligning with JPMorgan's forecast of 35 percent. However, the fact that the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) maintains a weighted average funding cost of 40 percent while the policy rate stands at 37 percent indicates that a cautious stance regarding the pace of rate cuts will persist.

Net Return of 242 Basis Points

Deciding to realize profits on the divergence of tenor rates despite the recent drop in oil prices, strategists announced the successful completion of the transaction. The trade concluded with the following results:
  • Entry level for the position: -520 basis points
  • Exit level from the position: -300 basis points
  • Total net return provided: 242 basis points
  • JPMorgan's move serves as a clear indicator of how foreign capital interprets the trajectory of the CBRT's monetary policy. The volatility in the belly of the yield curve (2y1y) provides critical signals on how our banking sector's funding costs will shape up in the medium term. A return of 242 basis points is not merely a speculative success but a technical data point confirming that the disinflation process is gaining permanence in pricing. For commercial credit cost dynamics, this strengthens expectations for an easing in short-term TL borrowing instruments.
