Kalshi's $40 Billion Valuation Play: A New Luxury in Prediction Markets

Prediction market titan Kalshi is emerging as the new darling of the investment world with its regulation-friendly structure and dominance in the US market, as it enters advanced discussions for a massive funding round led by Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management.

Wall Street's $40 Billion Signature on Betting Markets

Silicon Valley-based venture capital giant Sequoia Capital and Boston-based asset management behemoth Wellington Management are in advanced talks to provide $750 million in funding at a $40 billion valuation. This round represents a near doubling of the company's $22 billion valuation from May.

■Wellington Management, with $1.3 trillion in client assets under management, would be making its first investment in Kalshi.

■Sequoia Capital, an existing investor with $56 billion in assets under management, already holds a seat on Kalshi's board of directors.

■CEO Tarek Mansour stated in June that the company is planning an initial public offering (IPO) in 2027.

The Revenue War: Kalshi vs. Polymarket

Data indicates Kalshi has secured a significant revenue advantage over its crypto-native rival Polymarket. Demand, particularly fueled by betting on the 2026 World Cup, has fundamentally altered the company's financial statements.

■Kalshi's annualized revenue reached $4 billion in July, while Polymarket's revenue for the same period was recorded at only $1.1 billion.

■Over 80% of the company's volume comes from sports contracts, with Sequoia noting that Kalshi now claims a 95% market share in US prediction markets.

■Polymarket reached a $15 billion valuation in August after receiving a $600 million investment from ICE, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange.

Regulatory Shield and Leadership Rotation

Attorney Jeff Bandman, who played a pivotal role in securing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) license, has returned as CEO of Kalshi Prime. This move aims to bolster the company's margin perpetual futures business and maintain its legal advantage.

From a quant analyst perspective, a 10x price-to-sales (P/S) ratio with $4 billion in annualized revenue against a $40 billion valuation is excessively aggressive. Despite Polymarket's geographic restrictions, Kalshi must overcome regulatory barriers outside the US and close arbitrage gaps to justify this valuation. This level resembles a major bank valuation more than a tech startup, creating significant pressure on return expectations for investors.
