Texas Adds New Star: Spears Jr. Commitment Elevates Program to Elite Status

Texas Longhorns have strengthened their roster with the commitment of Marcus Spears Jr., the top recruit of the 2027 high school class, who reclassified and graduated early to join the 2026 season. At 17, the power forward led Team USA to a gold medal at last year's FIBA U16 AmeriCup, averaging 14 points and shooting 60.8% from the field. In the Nike EYBL grassroots circuit, he posted 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, ranking second and seventh respectively. Spears Jr., son of ESPN analyst Marcus Spears and former WNBA first-round pick Aiysha, brings both athletic pedigree and elite performance to a Texas program undergoing significant transformation under Sean Miller, who took over in March 2025. The Longhorns, who finished 21-15 last season and reached the Sweet 16, now rank No. 5 in CBS Sports' preseason poll, bolstered by five top-100 transfers including David Punch (No. 8) and Isaiah Johnson (No. 13). While Spears Jr. will remain in college until 2028 due to NBA draft eligibility rules, his presence signals a strategic investment in the university's sports economy and competitive positioning.
