The Meral Akşener Foundation, set to operate out of Istanbul, has been officially registered following an announcement in the Official Gazette. Having secured its corporate identity through a decision by the Istanbul Anatolia 34th Civil Court of First Instance, the foundation enters the sector with an initial asset allocation of 5 million TL in cash capital.
Corporate Identity and Capital Structure
Approved by the Directorate General of Foundations under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the foundation aims to develop projects for the public benefit in education, health, social, cultural, and environmental fields. The financial foundations of this new player in the civil economy are structured as follows:Governance and Legal Framework
The foundation's governing body has been shaped in line with corporate governance principles. The management roster includes founder Meral Akşener, alongside her former Private Secretary Esma Bekar and her son Fatih Akşener. This configuration emphasizes affiliation and continuity within the foundation's decision-making mechanisms. The most striking legal provision in the foundation's deed concerns the transfer of assets upon liquidation. Accordingly, in the event that activities cease for any reason, all remaining assets and rights following the settlement of debts and obligations will be transferred to the Mehmetçik Foundation.
Foundations are significant economic actors that exist outside public financing but are supported by tax advantages. The establishment of this structure with a substantial initial capital of 5 million TL points to the financing capacity of civil society. The condition that assets be transferred to the Mehmetçik Foundation in the event of liquidation serves as both a legal safeguard and a corporate legacy provision. From a fiscal policy perspective, the oversight and transparency of such foundations are as crucial as combating the unregistered economy.
