Turkey Central Bank Reserves Hit 5-Month High at $183.5 Billion

Turkey's Central Bank (TCMB) pushed its reserves to a five‑month peak, reaching $183.5 billion.

Reserves Climb to a New Summit

According to calculations by Matriks Haber from TCMB data, reserves stood at $178.4 bn in the week of Aug 7 and rose to $183.5 bn in the week of Aug 14, marking the highest level in the past five months.

From the January Peak to the August Recovery

In the week ending Jan 30 2026, reserves hit a historic high of $218.2 bn, after which they entered a volatile decline. A sharp drop occurred in March; by the week of Jun 26, reserves fell to $149.2 bn, the lowest point in roughly six months.

The July rebound saw reserves climb to $164.5 bn on Jul 31. In August, a robust increase pushed the figure from $178.4 bn to $183.5 bn, a net weekly gain of $5.1 bn.

Market Implications of the Weekly Surge

  • Aug 7 week: $178.4 bn reserves
  • Aug 14 week: $183.5 bn reserves (+$5.1 bn)
  • Jan 30 2026 week: $218.2 bn (historic peak)
  • Jun 26 week: $149.2 bn (six‑month low)
  • Market participants view this sudden rebound as a sign of improving liquidity and easing FX volatility. Nonetheless, reserves remain about $35 bn below the historic peak, indicating persistent external sector pressures. The central bank’s upcoming Aug 20 briefing will likely provide further guidance on monetary policy and FX interventions, crucial for shaping the short‑term trajectory of the Turkish lira.
