New Rail Crisis in England: How Air Freight Routes Could Be Affected?

England's prolonged drought and intense heatwave are causing significant disruptions to the railway network, creating critical bottlenecks in both freight and passenger transport. Major operators like South Western Railway (SWR) have been forced to reduce train speeds due to small changes in track geometry. Services between Yeovil and Exeter St Davids will be cut to one per hour from Monday 10 August, while journeys between London Waterloo and Exeter are expected to take up to 27 minutes longer. Operators in eastern England are taking similar measures. Network Rail has announced that late-night speed restrictions and altered timetables will come into effect from 3 August until ground conditions improve. The eastern end of London's Elizabeth line is also affected. Britain's railway network is predominantly built on clay soils that normally retain a lot of water. Prolonged drought reduces soil moisture, causing it to shrink and destabilizing the tracks. SWR's managing director, Lawrence Bowman, stated that 'extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, and this is the second year in a row that prolonged hot, dry weather has affected our network.' The company has strengthened the route since last summer's intervention and managed to reduce journey times in the amended timetable by around 30 minutes, ensuring passenger safety. Network Rail engineers are mitigating the effects of dried-out soil by using tampers to lift tracks, add stone ballast, and create a stable foundation. Last year, engineers treated about 62 miles (100km) of track on Anglia routes. In 2026, teams are expected to use 49,000 tonnes of ballast to keep the tracks as smooth as possible. This crisis could pose significant risks for air freight routes. As railway disruptions increase, potential delays in cargo transport could elevate operational costs for companies, ultimately impacting air freight pricing.
