More than half of the 224 branded baby foods and snacks sold in UK supermarkets are in violation of voluntary guidelines introduced by the government a year ago. Analysis shows that 58% breached at least one of the nine guidelines, while 25% violated two or more. Leading brands like Kiddylicious, Piccolo, and Heinz had 52%, 28%, and 27% of their products exceeding sugar limits, with the worst offenders including Organix raisins (86.6% sugar) and Kiddylicious apple fruit wriggles (85.6% sugar). Additionally, 6% of products (14 items) contained salt levels exceeding infant daily allowances, with Heinz spaghetti bolognese pouches exceeding a quarter of a baby’s daily salt intake in one meal. Experts argue mandatory standards are needed, as voluntary measures have failed. The government has set a February 2027 deadline, but industry representatives claim progress is being made despite the time required for reformulation.
