SDÜ's Domestic Railway Leap to Shield Logistics from Seismic Shocks

Süleyman Demirel University (SDÜ) is preparing to deploy a domestic infrastructure system that minimizes damage to railway lines during earthquakes and ensures logistics networks remain operational post-shock, as part of a critical R&D project conducted in collaboration with TÜBİTAK and AFAD.

Seismic Shield for Logistics Continuity

This strategic move aims to safeguard the country's commercial arteries, offering a technological solution against the logistical disruptions experienced following the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.

■The project targets the prevention of S-type buckling on rails during earthquakes, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid and commercial cargo post-disaster.

■The seismic durability of the infrastructure is enhanced through the developed "Carbon Fiber Reinforced Railway Infrastructure Seismic Reinforcement Method".

■SDÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Saltan emphasizes that the technological infrastructure at the university's Transport Laboratory forms the foundation of this national project.

Domestic Production and Patented Innovation

Despite having a 170-year history of railways, Turkey's lack of a sleeper design suited to its own climate and operational conditions heightens the economic and strategic importance of this project.

■Aimed at ending foreign dependency, Turkey's first national sleeper is being designed, with geometric optimizations currently in the testing phase.

■While 3D printers are used for prototype production, computer-aided analyses calculate maximum resistance against both earthquake and train loads.

■Two scientific articles (one in an international SCI Q1 journal) have been published to contribute to the literature, and a patent application has been filed with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for the system.
