SK Hynix's (SKHY) announcement of a $31 billion capex plan on Monday has intensified the chip sector crisis. The company plans to increase its annual capital expenditures by 50% to meet surging demand for memory chips driven by the AI boom. This move has triggered a sell-off across the sector. Shares of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (^SOX) are trading below their 50-day moving averages for the first time since April 2025. The index has declined 18.9% in July, on track for its largest monthly loss since 2008. "Chip stocks are becoming oversold," strategists at The Kobeissi Letter noted, as investors question whether AI spending is overheated and worry about rising competition from China. Sandisk (SNDK) shares have also plummeted 55% and are near their 200-day moving average.
SK Hynix's plan underscores the sector's overvaluation. Investors should expect significant pullbacks before the market corrects this extreme optimism.
