Rising Cost of Living in Turkey: New Peaks in Hunger and Poverty Thresholds

The upward pressure on basic food expenditures and general living costs in Turkey has reached a critical threshold according to July 2026 data. The latest report released by TÜRK-İŞ indicates that household budgets are struggling to meet fundamental needs, as inflationary effects continue to erode purchasing power.

Sharp Increases in Essential Living Indices

Based on calculations for Ankara, the gap between the amount required for a four-person family to maintain a healthy diet and the total cost of living continues to widen:

  • Hunger Threshold: 36,939.87 TL
  • Poverty Threshold: 120,325.30 TL
  • Monthly cost of living for a single worker: 47,758.39 TL
  • Seasonal and Structural Dynamics in Food Inflation

The change in food expenditures as of July reflects inflationary expectations on both a monthly and annual basis. The kitchen inflation metrics are structured as follows:

  • Monthly food expenditure increase: 3.30%
  • Annual average food increase: 40.60%
  • Analyzing the price movements, the expected seasonal decline in the fruit and vegetable group failed to materialize. In particular, rising prices for potatoes and onions are exerting significant pressure on low-income groups. In the meat sector, limited increases were noted in lamb and fish prices, while chicken and egg prices saw a decline. Regarding essential oils, sunflower oil prices rose, whereas a slight softening was observed in olive oil.

From a macroeconomic perspective, this resilient trend in food inflation directly threatens the quality of domestic demand and household savings capacity. Specifically, the 40.60% annual increase in food items will likely compress consumption habits toward essential goods as real wages erode. For market participants, this implies potential weakness in demand elasticity within the services and retail sectors and suggests continued pressure on the process of anchoring inflation expectations. On the BIST index side, the impact of rising costs on corporate margins must be closely monitored.
