Cocoa Prime: Turkey's Chocolate Exports Leap to $500 Million

Turkey is successfully implementing a value-added production model beyond traditional agricultural products, reaching an export figure of $500 million 781 thousand in the global chocolate market by leveraging quality and raw material advantages.

Sweet Rise in Export Data

According to information compiled by an AA reporter from Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) data, the cereals, pulses, oilseeds and products sector showed significant performance in the first half of the year.
  • In the January-June period, 5 million 290 thousand 36 tons of products were exported to 212 countries and free zones.
  • The sector's total export revenue was recorded as $5 billion 847 million 514 thousand.
  • While sunflower seed was the product generating the most revenue with $663 million 938 thousand, chocolate and cocoa products took the second place with $500 million 781 thousand.
  • Istanbul-Centric Production and Logistics Power

The sector's geographical focal point and organizational capability stand out as structural factors behind this success. Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Baklava, Pastry and Confectionery Profession Committee Chairman Mehmet Yıldırım states that the results of producers' quality-oriented moves are being reaped.
  • 95% of firms carrying out exports are located in Istanbul; Gaziantep and Adana serve as important supporting centers.
  • Market share is expanded by participating in fairs around the world through organizations like İHBİR.
  • Even the "Dubai chocolate" trend being produced in Turkey is evaluated as an indicator of local raw material (Antep pistachio, kadayıf) quality.
  • Value Chain and Employment Projection

The increase in production capacity is expected to have a direct multiplier effect on macroeconomic indicators. Sector representatives emphasize that if the current momentum is sustained, economic output will increase.
  • It is predicted that capacity utilization rates will rise in parallel with production increases.
  • Growth in the sector will lead to an increase in employment and a rise in added value.
  • By integrating with gastronomy tourism, the goal is to establish the "Turkish chocolate" brand in global perception.
  • This data clearly demonstrates how successful Turkey is in its transition strategy from low-value-added agricultural exports to processed food and branded product exports. The raw material advantage and logistical power emphasized by Mehmet Yıldırım not only help reduce the current account deficit but also create a resilient economic model that generates permanent employment. The $500 million volume in the chocolate sector is just the beginning of the potential of the food manufacturing industry.
