Turkey-KKTC Natural Gas Agreement: A New Turning Point for Energy Infrastructure

An agreement titled 'Memorandum of Understanding on Natural Gas Supply to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC)' was signed between Turkey and the KKTC. This memorandum is seen as a strategic step toward energy security and development goals following the underwater pipeline project that delivers water from Anatolia to the island. The agreement was signed between Cevdet Yılmaz, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, and Ünal Üstel, Prime Minister of the KKTC.
Strategic Energy Partnership
KKTC Prime Minister Üstel emphasized that the agreement would provide a new direction to the development journey, supporting production and increasing employment. He also mentioned that after natural gas supply, they would focus on the electricity project via submarine cable from Turkey. While feasibility studies for the project have been completed, approval from the European Union and ENTSO-E is still pending.
Future Energy Projects
Rüzgar Ersoy Note: This agreement represents a continuation of Turkey's energy strategy in the KKTC. Alongside natural gas supply, the electricity project has the potential to transform regional energy security. However, external factors such as EU and ENTSO-E approval may influence the project timeline. From a financial perspective, such infrastructure investments typically imply capital outflows and increased liquidity. The banking and fintech sectors could offer innovative solutions regarding financing and payment systems for energy projects.
