Taiwan's leading chipmaker, United Microelectronics Corp (UMC), has approved a $5 billion capital expenditure plan for 2026 and 2027. This strategic move includes expanding its facilities in Singapore and constructing a new production plant at its Tainan campus in Taiwan. CEO Jason Wang highlighted that the plan will focus on power and connectivity products for AI data centers, alongside automotive electrification and emerging applications like robotics. The company expects growth over the next five years and will implement the $2 billion 2026 budget in phases, ensuring flexible capacity deployment. UMC reported a 17% revenue increase to $2.12 billion in Q2 2026, with a 374.7% rise in net income. The stock has surged 120% year-to-date, outperforming the broader market, though it closed down 9.69% ahead of its earnings release.
This expansion comes as UMC maintains focus on mature nodes, contrasting with TSMC's heavy investment in 2-1 nm technologies. With projected AI revenue reaching $300 million this year and exceeding $1 billion in three years, UMC solidifies its strategic position in the chip sector.
