Trump's Moroccan Highway: Geopolitical and Economic Implications
724FinanceDefne Aydın

Donald Trump has indicated that Morocco is naming a 1,055 km highway after him, called the 'President Donald J. Trump Highway'. The road connects Tiznit to Laayoune and Dakhla in Morocco's disputed Western Sahara territory. Trump thanked Morocco's King Mohammed VI, calling it 'such an honor'. Morocco has occupied Western Sahara since 1975 and is locked in a frozen conflict with the Polisario Front. Trump recognized Morocco's claim to Western Sahara in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and Arab states. Morocco is also building a $1 billion port in the region.
Morocco's recognition of Western Sahara could reshape regional power dynamics, affecting global energy and trade routes.
