The sunflower harvest, one of the locomotives of agricultural production in the Vezirköprü district of Samsun, has entered a period where producers are balancing high input costs against the expected government procurement prices.

Yield Projections and Production Scale

For sunflowers, positioned as the second most strategic crop after wheat in the regional agricultural ecosystem, this year's projections are as follows:

■Cultivated Area: Approximately 83 thousand decares.

■Expected Total Yield: 24 thousand tons.

■Harvest Process: Operations that began at the end of August are expected to last about one month.

Input Costs and Pricing Pressure

While managing the physical harvest in the fields, producers are awaiting the announcement of official procurement prices, which will determine financial sustainability. Gültekin Kaya, President of the Vezirköprü Chamber of Agriculture, emphasizes the pressure exerted on farmers by rising production costs.

Sector representatives demand that the state considers two fundamental criteria in its pricing:

■Real compensation for increasing input costs.

■Preservation of the farmers' welfare share to ensure production sustainability.

Agricultural commodity pricing is a direct determinant of local producers' loan repayment capacity. In particular, volatility in input costs increases the financial risk profile of the farmer. If procurement prices deviate from market realities, it may lead to a contraction in planting areas for the next season, potentially causing supply shocks and maintaining upward pressure on food inflation.
