The average net worth of Baby Boomer households in the U.S. stands at $1.79 million, yet Pew Research data reveals that median net worth for this cohort is just $432,200. This means half of seniors aged 50+ have less than half a million in assets. AARP's 2024 report found that 20% of seniors over 50 had no retirement savings at all. The millionaires' primary wealth sources are homeownership and professional careers. Ben Carlson's analysis at Ritholtz Wealth Management shows that 40% of $1-$2 million net worth millionaires derive their wealth from real estate. Ramsey Solutions' survey of 10,000 millionaires revealed that the top five professions were engineer, accountant, teacher, manager, and attorney. Doctors were absent from the list. Additionally, 79% received no inheritance, 85% never earned six figures in a year, and only 15% held senior leadership positions.
The U.S. retirement system's biggest flaw is the widening wealth gap between generations, posing a critical financial security risk for future generations.
