US Senator Wyden Advocates for Crypto Developer Protections

US Senator Ron Wyden has called on Senate leaders to ensure the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act (BRCA) remains in the CLARITY Act. Wyden wrote to Senate Minority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, urging them to preserve the BRCA in the CLARITY Act. In the letter, Wyden argued that crypto developers who create and publish software that allows people to manage their own digital assets should not be treated as money transmitters solely because they create or publish software. Wyden stated that this approach punishes technological innovation and advancement in strategically important areas at a time when the US must remain globally competitive. The BRCA provides legal certainty for developers of open-source and non-custodial projects to continue building and developing the decentralized finance ecosystem in the US. Wyden urged Senate leaders to include the BRCA in any legislative package, stating that smart policy will empower law enforcement to do its job and facilitate innovation at the same time. The CLARITY Act is seen as a crucial step in regulating the US crypto market. However, some groups and lawmakers have argued that the BRCA could create gaps in oversight of illicit activity. Wyden's letter encourages the crypto industry to pressure Senate leaders to protect developers. The future of the CLARITY Act will be a significant turning point in the regulation of the US crypto market.
