The looming 'Super El Niño' phenomenon is poised to exacerbate already tight commodity markets, with wheat, sugar, and coffee production facing severe disruptions. Bank of America strategists warn that this event, which they describe as occurring only six times in the past 75 years, could lead to a 20%-60% drop in wheat production in Australia for the 2026-2027 season. Brazil's corn crop is expected to decline by 10%, while sugar production in Brazil, India, and Thailand could fall by 5%-10%. Coffee production in Vietnam and Indonesia may drop by 5%-15%.
