US Data Centers Cut the Cord: The 90 Gigawatt Energy Revolution
ABD'deki veri merkezi devleri, yapay zeka yarışında şebeke bağlantılarını beklemek yerine, enerji üretimini kendi bünyelerine alarak sektörde devasa b
In a race to dominate artificial intelligence, US data center giants are bypassing sluggish grid connections by bringing power generation in-house, initiating a massive infrastructure transformation across the sector.
The Race to Decouple: A 90 Gigawatt "Behind-the-Meter" Revolution
According to an analysis by Cleanview, which tracks energy and data center projects, 59 data center projects across the US are planning to install "behind-the-meter" electricity generation plants with a total capacity of 90 gigawatts to meet their needs directly. This capacity represents more than a quarter of all planned data center power in the US. The speed of investment is striking; 82 gigawatts, or approximately 92% of the planned capacity, has been announced since early 2025.
Silicon Valley's Energy Arm: From Meta to OpenAI's Natural Gas Bloc
The 24/7 uninterrupted electricity requirement of AI applications is turning tech giants into energy producers. Alongside behemoths like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are playing active roles in these projects.
Texas Leadership and the Permitting Labyrinth
While planned capacity is concentrated in specific states, Texas leads the pack due to its proximity to natural gas resources and regulatory framework. However, regulatory hurdles stand as risk factors in the transformation processes.
This strategic shift by data centers is not merely an infrastructure change but a critical leading indicator for future energy inflation (CPI) and industrial production data. The surge in off-grid demand could create volatility in natural gas prices, potentially pushing energy cost indices higher. Furthermore, such large-scale private capital expenditures hold the potential to deliver a positive shock to US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth figures.
