The US labor market, viewed as the engine of the economy, unexpectedly slammed on the brakes in July, fueling recession fears, while the macroeconomic implications of companies' tightening cost discipline reached surprising levels.
Hiring Race Stalls in July: Six-Month Low Point
The latest data published by Automatic Data Processing (ADP) reveals that US private sector companies created only 44,000 new jobs in July. This figure marks the weakest performance in six months, providing strong signals that the deepening stagnation (softness) in hiring processes is not just a temporary fluctuation but a structural shift.
As Valuation Director, I emphasize that this data is critical in our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) models. Such a cooling in the labor market may lead to a limitation in household income growth and consequently a downward revision of companies' revenue forecasts. If this stagnation becomes permanent, we may need to rescale our cash flow projections to bridge the gap between market price and intrinsic value, particularly for cyclical equities.
