Global investment bank Bank of America (BofA) radically shifted its equity balance on Borsa Istanbul during the week of August 10-14, pivoting heavily towards the defense and energy sectors while significantly reducing its holdings in retail. The strategic rotation executed by the institution clearly highlights the transformation in foreign capital's sectoral risk perception regarding Turkey and its confidence in current account deficit dynamics.
Billion Lira Allocation to Defense Industry
BofA's most striking move favored Aselsan, a global player in military electronics. The institution executed a massive purchase of approximately 2.99 billion TRY in the company during the period, confirming the value created by policies focused on offsetting the foreign trade deficit and promoting local production. This move once again proves that the defense industry is seen not just as a security approach, but also as a high-value-added export item.Strategic Pivot to Energy
Energy production potential also featured on the investor's radar. BofA diversified its portfolio on the energy front by making an entry of 956.65 million TRY in Aksa Energy Production (AKSEN) shares. This move is interpreted as a reflection of faith in Turkey's potential to become a regional energy hub and its domestic production capacity, despite volatility in global energy prices.Portfolio Reduction in Retail Sector
The biggest victim of BofA's strategic rotation was retail giant BİM. A sale exceeding 1.3 billion TRY was executed in the company's shares. This exit signals a cautious approach regarding the slowdown in domestic demand and the negative effects of inflationary pressures on retail margins. The tendency of foreign capital to move from consumption-driven growth models to production and export-driven models is concretized by this sale. This portfolio movement is proof that foreign capital is correctly reading Turkey's structural transformation. While purchases in the defense industry reflect confidence in state-backed export guarantees and high technological added value, the sales in BİM carry an early warning nature regarding the pressure consumption slowdown will create on budget revenues in the next fiscal cycle. The critical role of defense industry exports in financing the current account deficit has been reaffirmed by these investment preferences.
