BP Seals Major Venezuelan Gasfield Deal with Partners Tied to Trump Administration
BP, Donald Trump'ın Venezuela'nın fosil yakıt endüstrisini yeniden inşa etme çağrısına yanıt vererek, ülkenin en büyük offshore gaz sahalarından biri

BP has answered Donald Trump’s call to help rebuild Venezuela’s fossil fuel industry, securing a strategic partnership to develop the second phase of the Loran gasfield. This move marks one of the first large-scale foreign investments in the country since the U.S. ousted Nicolás Maduro in January, positioning the London-based energy giant alongside firms with deep ties to the Trump administration and Gulf state investors.
High-Profile Alliances and Strategic Returns
BP's strategic maneuver underscores the intersection of geopolitics and energy investment, utilizing partnerships with entities closely linked to the current U.S. administration's inner circle:
This deal makes BP one of the first major international oil firms to return to Venezuela following rival Shell’s license for the first phase of the Loran field earlier this summer. Caracas is also in negotiations over oil projects with the Italian giant Eni.
Resurrecting a Fallen Giant
Despite holding the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela’s production had plummeted from over 3.5m barrels a day in the late 1990s to roughly 1m barrels a day due to decades of neglect and corruption. However, the landscape is shifting under the Trump administration's oversight of the industry:
BP Chief Executive Meg O’Neill described the license as “an important step forward,” emphasizing that the company’s deep experience in the region provides a strong foundation to unlock Venezuela’s offshore gas potential.
The resurgence of Venezuelan production is a critical variable for global freight markets. Increased crude flows to the U.S. Gulf will likely boost demand for Aframax and Suezmax tankers in the Caribbean basin, reducing the ton-mile burden on shipments from the Middle East. However, if refined products are routed to Asia, we could see increased congestion and rate volatility in the Panama Canal. This shift fundamentally alters the supply-demand equation for Western Hemisphere energy logistics.
