U.S. New Trade War with Brazil: Pix's Rise and Credit Card Industry's Crisis
ABD, Brazil'in başarılı Pix ödeme sistemini 'ticaret engeli' olarak nitelendirerek ülkeye yeni 25% gümrük vergisi uyguladı. Bu, ABD'nin kredi kartı şi
The U.S. has labeled Brazil's successful Pix payment system a 'trade barrier' and imposed a new 25% tariff on Brazilian imports. This move is seen as an effort by Washington to protect credit card companies from the growing appeal of Pix. Launched in 2020, Pix now handles over 51% of all transactions in Brazil and boasts 170 million users. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer argued that Pix provides a 'government-backed advantage' to U.S. companies, potentially undermining their competitiveness. However, Brazil's Central Bank Governor Gabriel Galipolo dismissed such claims, stating Pix is a public service and has actually increased credit card usage. The U.S. move reflects a broader trend where digital payment systems threaten traditional financial institutions. Pix has signed data-sharing agreements with 65 countries, including Germany, Canada, and South Africa. This development could signal a new era in global payment system competition.
