Turkey's fluctuating trade balance and movements in capital flows are shifting the focus of financial markets to macroeconomic data, as the results of the AA Finans survey clearly reveal economists' cautious stance on the current account deficit. Ahead of the June Balance of Payments statistics to be announced by the Central Bank on Thursday, August 13, market expectations signal a significant widening.
Unexpected Expansion in June Period
The expectation survey, shaped by the participation of economists, indicates that the expected deficit in the current account is showing a marked increase compared to May. The deficit, recorded as $1.459 billion in May, is projected to rise sharply to $4.9182 billion in June.Year-End Macro Outlook and Forecasts
Forecasts not limited to monthly data show that year-end current account deficit expectations are also being revised, shaping up within a fairly wide range. Economists predict that the current account will post a deficit of $52.391 billion by the end of 2026.The rising trend in the current account deficit signals that the tight stance in monetary policy may persist for macroeconomic stability. From a portfolio management perspective, increased volatility in exchange rates threatens the profit margins of companies with high import input, while creating a window of opportunity for exporters and firms with robust cash flows generating currency-based revenue. In this environment, "defensive" stocks with high dividend yields and low leverage ratios will serve as a critical shock absorber, enhancing the portfolio's resilience against volatility.
