Humanoid Robots' Biggest Hurdle: Humans Are Still (Mostly) Better

Industry leaders at the World Robot Conference in Beijing highlighted that the biggest challenge for humanoid robots remains making the technology work effectively. Unitree's founder Wang Xingxing noted that robots are not yet as efficient as humans and take time to learn new skills, creating bottlenecks. His remarks came a day after Unitree's shares surged 460% on IPO day, later falling 18.7%. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission added foreign-made advanced robotic devices, including humanoids, to a restricted import list, though it didn't specify a country. However, the impact is minimal now as few humanoids are used in the U.S. According to Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation, the focus in the U.S. is more on autonomous mobile robots. "Companies want solutions, not whether it's a humanoid or traditional robot. They just need a fix," Burnstein said. He stressed that humanoid robots must be affordable, safe, and ready for use. Keenon, a startup, develops humanoids to work alongside simpler delivery robots for tasks like hotel laundry services. COO Wan Bin revealed the company has shipped over 100,000 robots and expects to exceed 150,000 units by the end of next year. Achieving a 99.9% task completion rate demands advanced engineering and training.

The robotics industry's future hinges on whether technology can replace human labor effectively. Humanoid robots will likely gain more traction in automation, but immediate needs are being met with simpler solutions.
