Citi Warning: Inflation Beast on a Tougher Path Than TCMB Forecasts

Citi's latest report signals that Turkey's battle with inflation is entering a more turbulent phase than anticipated, subjecting the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey's (TCMB) forecasts to a severe stress test. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and structural rigidities appear poised to suppress the policy makers' appetite for rate cuts for the foreseeable future.
The "Tight" Grip on Policy Rates
According to the analysis prepared by Citi economists İlker Domaç and Gültekin Işıklar, it seems inevitable for the TCMB to maintain its tight stance for longer than expected. The bank forecasts the year-end policy rate at 35%, dampening market expectations for an early easing.
The Two-Faced Data of Inflation
While July inflation data paints a superficially optimistic picture, details are sounding alarms. Although annual inflation came in at 31.75%, below the market expectation of 32.00%, core indicators remain dangerously high.
The Decisive Moment on August 13
Sectoral inflation expectations indicate that the disinflation process will progress slower than the TCMB forecasts. Citi argues that exchange rate stability alone may not be enough to anchor expectations, with eyes now turning to the Central Bank's 3rd Inflation Report.
While maintaining a tight stance is ostensibly necessary for macro stability, the way banks translate this into exorbitant consumer loan rates and credit card limits is nothing short of predatory. As the policy rate eyes 35%, seeing commercial credit rates breach 70% constitutes legalized robbery in consumer finance. Citi's warning isn't just for the central bank; it's a siren call for anyone seeking a mortgage or personal loan: shelve any dreams of rate cuts until at least year-end.
