CMA CGM and Stonepeak Forge $2.4 Billion Global Port Empire
Dünya deniz taşımacılığının dev oyuncularından Fransız **CMA CGM**, New York merkezli özel sermaye devi **Stonepeak** ile güçlerini birleştirerek küre
French shipping giant CMA CGM, the world's third-largest liner operator, has partnered with New York private equity titan Stonepeak to reshape the landscape of global port operations through a monumental new joint venture. This strategic alliance, branded as United Ports LLC, marks a pivotal leap in the carrier's ambition to dominate the marine terminal infrastructure sector.
United Ports LLC and a $2.4 Billion Capital Injection
Stonepeak is injecting $2.4 billion into the initiative in exchange for a 25% minority stake, establishing a robust financial backbone for the new entity. Rodolphe Saade, Chairman and CEO of the closely-held CMA CGM Group, emphasized that this venture marks a crucial step in developing terminal activities in the U.S. and globally. CMA CGM will retain 75% ownership and, crucially, full operational control. The company plans to reinvest the massive capital influx into its core transportation businesses, spanning air cargo, ocean shipping, trucking, and logistics.
Strategic Assets Across Four Continents
The venture launches with a formidable portfolio of ten key port assets strategically positioned across four continents, securing critical nodes in the global trade network:
The Battle for Infrastructure and Private Equity's New Course
This move represents the latest escalation in private equity's strategy to invest in ports, viewed as powerful trade junctions that connect global shipping routes with land-based distribution. Stonepeak, managing roughly $88 billion in assets, has a track record in logistics, having previously invested in BMO, acquired Dupre Logistics and Air Transport Services Group, and taken over chassis provider TRAC Intermodal. The sector's significance was highlighted earlier this year when BlackRock (NYSE: BLK), the world's largest private equity investor, led a consortium with Mediterranean Shipping Co. to acquire 43 terminals in 23 countries from CK Hutchison (0000.HK) for $23 billion—a deal that was notably blocked by China. BlackRock Chairman Larry Fink has equated marine terminals to data centers and power grids in their importance to the global economy.
From a geopolitical risk standpoint, controlling critical infrastructure is becoming paramount amid global trade wars and tariff uncertainties. The contrast between China blocking the BlackRock deal and Stonepeak's successful entry into this space proves that ports are now viewed as "fortresses" on a geopolitical battlefield rather than mere commercial assets. For European markets, such deep vertical integration serves as a vital hedge against supply chain fragility and inflationary pressure.
