Coinbase Urges Canada to Enforce Clear Crypto Regulations: 'All Financial Services Under One Roof'

Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) is calling for Canada to adopt clear and permanent regulations to govern the cryptocurrency industry. Canada CEO Eric Richmond emphasized the need for Canada's regulatory framework to evolve to keep pace with global standards during a conference in Toronto. Coinbase is expanding into the Canadian market with plans to offer crypto trading and a broad range of financial products built on blockchain technologies. Richmond noted that Canada was among the earliest jurisdictions to approve Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) spot ETFs and establish a registration framework for crypto trading. However, he argued that the approach relying on company-specific exemption orders has become ineffective as firms seek to launch more sophisticated digital asset products. These calls come as the U.S. Clarity Act for crypto regulation moves through Congress and Canada imposes restrictions on Bitcoin ATMs and crypto mining in some provinces. With COIN stock down 55% over the past year, the need for clear regulatory frameworks in Canada is becoming increasingly critical for the future of the crypto industry in the region.
