Dubai Crude Premium Surprise: Gulf Tensions and Supply Volatility Shake Markets?

Uncertainty over oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint in the Middle East—sent Dubai crude’s spot premium surging on Friday, while Oman and Murban crude premiums slipped in tandem. Trafigura, the dominant buyer over the past three sessions, led the charge, as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Gulf reignited supply concerns. Two Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), including Spain B—laden with 2 million barrels of crude from Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura on July 12—anchored off Fujairah, UAE, while Noble departed Iraq’s Basra port on July 25, bound for China. Though monthly premiums for Oman and Dubai crude dipped in July amid improved shipping flows early in the month, the resurgence of regional instability has injected fresh volatility into pricing benchmarks.
