As the European Union's (EU) new tax regime for shipments under 150 Euros disrupts global e-commerce dynamics, Turkey has successfully preserved its competitive edge by fortifying its Customs Union advantages with a digital strategy.
Brussels' Tax Shield and Ankara's Digital Countermove
The regulation, effective July 1, which introduced an additional 3 Euro tax per item, targeted primarily Chinese exports but created cost pressures across global supply chains. The automation system launched by the Ministry of Trade now enables the A.TR Movement Certificate to be generated instantly from declaration data. This move secures Turkey's rights under the Customs Union through cyber measures, ensuring continued price competitiveness in the EU market. From $2 Billion to $20 Billion: Scaling Potential
Industry data indicates a massive growth window has opened for Turkish e-exports. Emre Ekmekçi, Vice President of the Turkish E-Commerce Business Association (ETID), summarizes the market dynamics with the following figures:Logistics Investments and SME Transformation
Berke İçten, President of the Turkish Footwear Industry Association (TASD), notes that e-exports have reached 25% of traditional exports, emphasizing that logistics processes have accelerated thanks to warehouses established, particularly in Eastern Europe. İçten predicts that e-exports to Europe could double within the next 1-2 years. However, industry representatives highlight that regulatory burdens on marketplaces in the domestic market limit resources allocated for exports, calling for the removal of these barriers. This development is not merely a temporary tax exemption, but a structural inflection point that will preserve the operational margins of Turkish companies. From an investor perspective, marketplace platforms with strong logistics infrastructure, dominance in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) category in the European market, and integration of SMEs into their ecosystem hold potential for long-term value creation.
