Europe's 10,000+ Excess Deaths: Climate Change and Health Crisis

Europe's unusually early and severe heatwave this year has resulted in over 10,000 excess deaths. EuroMOMO data shows 14,260 excess deaths in the week ending June 28, out of a total 84,583 deaths. Over 12,000 of these were among people aged 65 and older. Germany recorded 6,830 heat-related deaths, while France saw at least 2,000 more deaths than expected. Experts note that many of these deaths were caused by heat-related heart attacks, respiratory illnesses, and other climate-linked health issues, though full official records are still emerging. This follows Europe's deadliest heat year in 2003, which saw around 70,000 deaths, highlighting how climate change is exacerbating extreme heatwaves.

These deaths serve as a stark warning about the growing impacts of global warming. Activities like coal, oil, and gas burning in the energy sector are fueling the frequency and severity of such events.
