Evergrande's Collapse: China's Top Developer's Founder Sentenced to Life in Prison
Çin'in en büyük inşaat şirketi Evergrande'in kurucusu Hui Ka Yan, 67 yaşında, 8.8 milyar yuan (£950 milyon) ceza ile birlikte yaşam boyu hapis cezasın

Hui Ka Yan, the founder of China's largest property developer Evergrande, has been sentenced to life imprisonment and had all his personal assets confiscated. Hui, 67, was convicted of eight charges including financial fraud, illegal fundraising, and securities fraud. The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court ruled that between 2016 and 2021, Hui 'violated state laws by employing sustained large-scale financial fraud to inflate assets and conceal liabilities.' Evergrande, which delisted from the Hong Kong stock exchange last year, has defaulted on most of its $300 billion in liabilities. The company was fined 8.8 billion yuan ($950 million), while its property arm was fined 7 billion yuan ($760 million). Hui's convictions relate to a debt crisis at Evergrande, which shook China at a time when the government was trying to reduce the country's reliance on the real estate sector. The Chinese government introduced regulations in 2020 limiting the amount of debt property companies could hold, which torpedoed the debt-fueled real estate sector. Construction stalled on hundreds of property developments as companies scrambled for cash amid weak demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The collapse of Evergrande highlights the challenges facing China's real estate sector, which still accounts for between one-quarter and one-third of the country's GDP. The case underscores the risks of excessive debt and regulatory crackdowns in the sector.
